Trailblazer: Hank's Flyers Hank’s Flyers is a team of friends and family members riding in memory of husband, father, granddad, and friend, Hank Stoecker. Hank, a retired commercial pilot, was an adventurer and an athlete. He was always on the move—until ALS.
The Stoecker Family lost Hank last October, a scant 4 months after diagnosis, and they’re riding to defeat the disease that felled him.
Terri, Hank’s wife, believes the Ride was a great way to get involved, because Hank was such a passionate athlete and because the Ride raises much-needed funds for The ALS Association.
“I was impressed with The ALS Association’s determination to help Hank and me after his diagnosis. I made one call to Jessica B., our Care Coordinator at the Chapter, and she was immediately involved in our fight against the disease. Before I knew it, Jessica was out to the house and ready to help, hands-on,” Terri explained.
Family friend, Tammy Carr, was first to hear about the Ride to Defeat ALS and she brought it to Terri’s attention. They registered just in time to participate in Team Week, where they met challenge after challenge and emerged victorious. Being Team Week Champions was important to them.
“We needed to soar high for Hank,” said Team Captain Tammy. “We wanted to get his name and story out for the world to see, and Team Week allowed us that opportunity.”
Tammy is inspired by Hank’s memory and his family’s resolve. She’s raised funds for other charities and decided to put that experience and talent to work to help those with Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
“We knew we needed to take part in this event,” said Tammy.
Terri believes that everyone “needs to communicate that this disease, in particular, needs to be stopped.”
“This Ride might be the fundraiser that raises enough to push research over the edge and find a cure,” Terri stated passionately.
Terri is passionate about this endeavor, just as Hank was about life, but she acknowledges that although she’s looking forward to the event, in one respect, she’s “overwhelmed.”
“The emotional part is going to be incredibly hard”, shared Terri. “I do, however, look forward to the camaraderie. I think it’s going to be bittersweet.”
Hanks’s bikes have moved from the garage to a bike shop to get tuned. Terri and her grandson, Cody will ride them on November 5th.
When asked what drives her to be a top fundraiser, she explained, “If the situation were reversed, Hank would have been knocking over doors to fundraise for me.”
