Thank you for helping me reach my Walk to Defeat ALS(R) fundraising goal!

2020 has been a year most of us would rather forget. No doubt this has been a difficult year for everybody, but it’s been particularly difficult for people living with ALS. In addition to the disruption from COVID 19 that everyone experienced, we lost 4 ALS warriors from my support group alone and I lost the use of my arms and legs making me totally dependent on my wheelchair to get around and eye gaze technology to use a computer, in fact that is how I am writing this. While some might throw their arms up in the air and surrender, I doubled down on my fight so no one else had to deal with this horrible disease. This is why I humbly ask today for your support in our to defeat ALS and put and end to its devastating effects.

The road to defeat ALS is a difficult one, but I firmly believe that it is not an impossible one. Even in these difficult times we have made great strides in the fight against ALS thanks to your generosity and support .

-Over 1400 ALS patients where seen last year at the state's certified multidisciplinary ALS clinics. We even added one more certified ALS clinic bringing the total to five in addition to the other regional centers.

- Over 1700 people participated in the 19 support groups sponsored by the chapter throughout the state.

- People like myself were able to have access to much needed equipment and grants.

-The chapter sponsored seminars on topics from helping caregivers manage the challenges and stress of caring for a loved one with ALS, to updates on clinical research and treatments.

This year also saw progress on the research front with several potential treatments advancing on their clinical trials, with very positive results. These potential treatments have shown significant improvements in life expectancy and even some reversal in the physical impacts to ALS patients. A new consortium for drug trials was created this year, fast tracking the clinical trial process. All of these are important advances, while we continue to strive for a cure.

Your support propelled the advocacy effort which was responsible for important increases in the federal monies allocated to research. We also saw the passage in congress of a bill that eliminates the five month waiting period for Social Security disability insurance. At the state level we were able to increase funding to the certified ALS clinics by 800% over last year.

None of these things would’ve been possible without your support, and while I am proud of the accomplishments of this year, specially under such challenging circumstances, we’re not done yet. I am doing my part as a member of the board of directors, as member of multiple committees and workgroups and as a donor myself. But I need your help! Every 90 minutes somebody is diagnosed with ALS. Every 90 minutes somebody dies of ALS. We need your help if we’re going to ever see a world without ALS. Consider that just about a year ago we saw the start of a devastating pandemic. However with the right resources we were able to develop a vaccine in record time and assist many people who were financially impacted. Imagine what we could do if we made defeating ALS a priority.
