Respite - Homecare
It takes a community of people to care for a person with ALS. One family member cannot provide all of the care alone. We provide respite grants based on need and availability of funds to give family caregivers a break and an opportunity to restore themselves.
The Florida Chapter Respite Program is supported in part by the Maureen Slattery Miller Care Fund.
Comments from family caregivers receiving respite:
‘On Friday when I was exhausted and felt like I could not go on, I remembered my respite worker, Sue, a certified nursing assistant, would be here on Tuesday to give me a break, and I was able to face the weekend.’
‘When I had outpatient surgery scheduled, the Florida Chapter respite grant made it possible for me to hire a respite home health aide to care for my wife while I recovered.’
'The respite home health aide has helped my husband with neals since I have been out of commission these last couple of days. She comes in the morning to help him get ready for his day, and then comes at mealtimes to help him eat. I had no idea that a simple help like that could take so much stress out of my life. He enjoys her coming and so do I.'
