“ALS multidisciplinary clinics have been proven to extend patient survival by 30 percent or more, sometimes adding years of life.  It’s also important not to underestimate the value of these face-to-face visits for patients and their families.  The impact of the human touch is vital in treating ALS and the clinic itself also becomes a de facto support group, providing a real community and support for both patient and caregiver.”

 - Clifton Gooch, M.D., University of South Florida ALS Center of Excellence, Tampa

The Florida Chapter has teamed up with some of the best ALS physicians and clinics in the state, ensuring that our patients have access to state-of-the-art, ALS-specialized care.  These ALS Clinics and ALS Association Certified Centers of Excellence provide compassionate care in a supportive, family-oriented atmosphere modeled after the criteria of The ALS Association Center℠ Program.

This unique model brings together a team of medical professionals specially trained to meet the needs of those living with ALS, allowing the patient to receive care from each discipline during a single visit.  A multidisciplinary team typically includes a neurologist, a physical therapist, an occupational therapist, a respiratory therapist, a nurse, a registered dietician, a psychologist or psychiatrist, a speech and language pathologist, a social worker, and an ALS Association Chapter Liaison.

A member of our Care Management team is always present when a patient registered with us visits one of our affiliated Clinics or Certified Centers.  We communicate and work closely with clinic staff, assuring they provide the specialized care necessary to meet the needs of each patient.

The Chapter is affiliated with four ALS Certified Centers of Excellence and one Recognized Treatment Centers: the Mayo Clinic in Florida ALS Certified Center of Excellence, the University of Miami Kessenich ALS Certified Center of Excellence, the University of South Florida ALS Center of Excellence in Tampa, the UF Health Jacksonville ALS Center of Excellence, and the Lee Health ALS Recognized Treatment Center in Ft. Myers.

ALS Certified Centers of Excellence and Recognized Treatment Centers:

The ALS Association Certified Centers of Excellence Program designs, implements, and monitors a national standard of best-practice care in the management of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Certifications are based on established requirements of programs, professionals’ skill sets, people living with ALS served, active involvement in ALS-related research, relationships with local Chapters, and access to care.  Achieving certification through successful completion of the program’s robust clinical and administrative reviews confirm to people living with ALS, family members, caregivers, national organizations, private and publicly-held companies, government institutions, and other key stakeholders the validity and comprehensiveness of the Certified Center of Excellence’s standards of quality and implementation of best practices.  The ALS Association Recognized Treatment Centers have the same high quality approach to multidisciplinary care as The ALS Association Certified Treatment Centers of Excellence; however, they may not offer onsite research or opportunities to participate in clinical trials.
